We examined the Top 10 Second baseman of the 1970’s who played at least four seasons and a minimum of 80 games strictly as a second baseman.

Our rating for fielding was based in the following categories:

Chances, Putouts, Assist, Errors, and DP’s.

The offensive rating was based upon:

Runs, Hits, Doubles, Triples, HR’s, RBI’s, SB, CS, Walks, K’s, Batting Average, OBP


Points were awarded their rank in each category. If a player placed for first in a category they earned one point and so on . Additional points were awarded for errors, caught stealing and strikeouts, while bonus reductions of one point were issued toward the final tally; those points were Gold Gloves, All Star, League Leader, while two points were deducted for being the MVP of their league.

Number ten Tommy Helms Cincinnati Reds, Houston Astros, Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Red Sox. Helms placed on the defensive side as the fourth rated second baseman, however his offensive stats placed him 14th. A three time Gold Glover winner, three time leader in the N.L. in double plays and feilding percentage, one time NL leader in assists and putouts.

Number nine, Jerry Remy, California Angels, Boston Red Sox. Remy was a three time All Star, one time AL leader in double plays, in the scoring column Remy was third in assists, fifth in DP’s, eight overall On the offensive side of the diamond Remy ranked third in the stolen bases, fifth in batting average, 10th overall.

Number eight Jorge Orta, Chicago White Sox. One time All-Star during the 1970’s. On the offensive side of the diamond, Orta ranked 5th in hits, fourth in batting average, top five in runs and RBI’s and doubles in our scoring, while defensively Orta ranked top six in our scoring in chances and assists.

Number seven Davey Johnson, Baltimore Orioles, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies. Johnson A Four time All-Star, three time Gold Glove winner. While a player for the Orioles, Johnson led the league with 379 putouts in 1970, 71 lead league in DP’s, (103), 72 his feilding percentage of .990 was paced the AL. In 73 his first season with the Atlanta Braves he led the league with 30 errors, yet led the league in DP’s with 106. In his first season with the Braves he, Darrell Evans and Hammering Hank Aaron each hit 40 or more home runs.

Number six Manny Trillo, Oakland A’s, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies Trillo a one time all-star and Gold Glove winner during his five year tenure. On our grading system Trillo's offensive overall rating placed him in eighth. Defensively Trillo led the NL in assists four times, Double plays once as well as being a one time all-star and Gold Glove winner. Overall Trillio placed fifth in our defensive analytics

Number five Felix Millan, Atlanta Braves, New York Mets. Millan's defensive skills placed him number five overall. Three out of seven years he played in the 70’s he was selected to the NL all-star, two time Gold Glove, one time top 20 MVP selection, assist leader in the NL, paced the NL in putouts as well as leading the NL in feilding percentage. Millian placed in the top 5 in our grading system on the defensive side of the diamond.


Number four Rod Carew, Minnesota Twins, California Angels. Carew only played second base for the Twins. While Carew placed high in our list his offensive numbers were always in the top three. Ten times batted over .300 and all-star, seven time top 15 in MVP voting, six had the highest batting average in the AL,four time leader in OPS, three times in the 70’s he paced the AL in hits, four times collected 200 or more hits, twice led the AL in triples one time MVP

Number 3 Dave Cash Pittsburgh Pirates, Montreal Expos. Cash was a three time NL All Star. In our scoring Cash ranked eight in defense while placing third on the offensive side. Cash was the NL leader three consecutive years 74,75,76 in At Bats, a one time leader in hits and triples. On the Defensive side three time leader for the NL in double plays, twice in fielding percentage and put outs, one time NL leader in assists. In our scoring Dave ranked fourth in hits and batting average, fifth in doubles

Number two Bobby Grich Baltimore Orioles, California Angels,who was a five time Gold Glove winner, a four time all-star,putout leader,and top 20 in MVP voting three time assist leader and double plays, once paced the AL in slugging percentage, OPS, and feilding percentage. Based on our scoring system Grich ranked extremely high in both offensive and defensive in the baseball diamond

Number one Joe Morgan Houston Astros and Cincinnati Reds. Morgan is the only second baseman from this decade earning his way into the Hall. A nine time all-star, Five time Gold Glover recipient, MVP selection in the top 10 four times Morgan paced led the NL in OBS.three times as well as feilding percentage, putouts, Twice led the NL in walk, OPS, MVP , once he led the NL in runs scored,slugging, in triples, assist, and double plays. Morgan ranked number one in our scoring offensively and top three in defense.
